In this episode we start producing blue science packs, also known as Science Pack 3. Both names are creative, to be sure. Blue science is a considerable jump in complexity from red and green science. Why do I consider the jump to be a big one? Because you need to set up several new technologies before you can even start making it: oil processing, then plastic, then red circuits, and only then can you make blue science packs. It can be daunting for newer players, but if you've been following along with me so far, we are almost there.

In this base, I decided to build a dedicated area to make engine units. Those are one of the ingredients to blue science, and one of the ingredients for electric engines, which are used in production science packs later on. Putting the engines in their own area is easy to do, and it simplifies the blue science production layout considerably. For newer players, I recommend this technique of separating the components of complex production chains. It makes it easier to progress by breaking the task into more manageable chunks, and simplifies troubleshooting when things are not working as expected.

I noticed that there were several points in this video where I mention "blue circuits", when actually I meant to say "blue science". Blue circuits come a little later. Sorry for any confusion that may cause.

This is a tutorial let's-play series in Factorio version 0.15. This series is aimed towards newer players, or those who have been away from the game for a while. I will spend more than the usual amount of time explaining what I'm doing and why. The goal of this playthrough is to get to a fairly quick single rocket launch. I am playing without mods, and enemy bases are set to "None" (no biters) to put the focus on base-building.
