Make your Factorio steam engines smart. Learn how to set up an s-r latch that let's you use the energy stored in the accumulators instead of burning coal. During the day the solar panels charge the accumulators that then actually power your base at night. Only when running low the steam engines will kick in to assist / resupply power. You can save a lot on coal with that.
