When Red and Shorty reach home, speak to Red.

Offer to give general help to access dialogue to train the Big Town residents.
You can only train them with one skill.

With +50 small guns, you teach them how to shoot. I don't recommend it. They'll end up rushing enemies and dying.

With 50+ sneak, you teach them to hide. This is alright, but they have no defenses if a creature of the wasteland attacks.

With 50+ science, you help them repair two robots. This is nice since they gain some guardians.

With 50+ explosives, the set up mines beyond the bridge. This is also pretty decent method of helping them defend themselves.

After repelling the super mutant attack on the town, talk to Timebomb to gain his Lucky 8 Ball, which raises your luck by 1 as long as you carry it.
