Many of my challenges for this YouTube Video focus on losing weight. Whether it’s by playing a fitness-based video game or doing a particular exercise a certain number of times. Trying to become thin and healthy is something that I struggled with a lot in my life. During one of these videos, commentor @tallintaiwan suggested I try eating ten fruits and vegetables daily. A challenge that was rather costly but worth it.
[Introduction]
With the suggestion added, I went ahead and created my own challenge. It was to eat ten total servings of fruit and vegetables every day for sixty days. I did this challenge from March 28th, 2024, to May 18th, 2024. If you did the math, you would notice that I skipped some days. Well, that is due to life kind of getting in the way of this challenge. I would sometimes run out of fruits and vegetables, or I would be out on vacation or spend the weekend with my parents. So, while I did fail the challenge of doing it sixty days in a row… I still successfully completed the challenge, dammit! While doing this challenge, I tried to record every couple of days as a sort of food blog. I was trying to record everything I ate that day but forgot some things. Here are my food vlogs for days 1, 2, 6, and 13. The first two weeks of my challenge.
(Day 1,2,6,13)
Now, let’s take a break and discuss the benefits of having ten servings of fruits and vegetables. Well, let’s get into the science! As reported by fruitsandveggies.org, a Foundation for Fresh Produce site, an article on a study from the Journal of Epidemiology. This study is the largest one on fruits and vegetables, with over two and one million participants across all publications. The results found: “An unprecedented benefit of increased fruit and veggie intake on preventing chronic disease and premature death. When individuals consumed 10 servings of fruits and veggies per day, researchers observed:
24% lower risk of coronary heart disease
33% lower risk of stroke
28% lower risk of cardiovascular disease
31% lower risk of all-cause mortality
14% lower risk of cancer (7-7.5 servings/day)”
As someone who is morbidly obese, these results are something that I needed. So, I excitedly dipped into the world of fruits and vegetables. Here are the next few days of my food journey: days 25, 30, 31, and 33.
By this point, I was halfway over and excited to be done. The main challenge of this video is getting fruits and vegetables. A few times, I did not have enough fruits and vegetables to get to ten servings. I go to the store every two weeks or so. That means most of my intake was based on Frozen items, specifically from Costco. I have a small fridge, so only a few big bags can be stored at a time. I needed a few bags for my protein shake and meat, so I really only had a few veggies on hand. That lead to me eating more fruits than veggies for most of my challenge. I also did cheat a few times with apple sauce and French fries. Yes, the USDA classifies French fries as a fresh vegetable. Yes, there is a reason why America has an obesity problem. All of this is to say that the lack of accessible daily fresh produce made this challenge super hard, and I don’t even live in a food desert. According to the USDA Access Census report, almost thirteen percent of Americans live in one. If I lived in a more rural setting, I don’t think I could even complete this challenge.
All this to say, this is one of my most challenging videos, both financially and time-wise, which made me understand why I didn’t do the challenge for sixty days straight. Despite these setbacks, I continued my food vlogs for days 42, 49, 56, and 60.
