My series on playing Asgard's Wrath ends now! After just two rounds, I have completed the Virtual Reality Epic. Created by Meta and Sanzaru Games, Does the ending of the original game make Odin proud, or will it have me wanting more? How many calories did I burn in this round and in total? Does my game break with the notorious number of bugs? Well, it all comes down to this final playthrough of Asgard's Wrath on PCVR.
[Intro]
First, let's dive back into the story of Asgard's Wrath. You play as a god in training, learning your craft. To learn, you follow along with Loki, the god of mischief. You must gather the stones to make him happy, and in turn, we will teach you how to control your powers and those of the characters you possess. There are four different characters, ranging from a human to a giant to a blood elf. While I was playing the game last, I was in the last Saga. I was exiled by Odin to a jail cell and must break out of it and return to Asgard and Loki. To do so, I must use my animal friends and their special abilities, such as becoming invisible and gathering items past a wall. These animals range from a giant bull to a weirdly erotic owl character. I haven't ruled 34 this game yet but I know there will be tons of art for this game.
Once I hopped back into the adventure, much of the shine and praise I gave in my original review faded away. It's been about four months, and at that time, I've played so many different virtual reality games that I was no longer impressed with the technology. That, combined with the lackluster ending part of the game, made me less appreciative of this round. Not to mention the bugs. One such had me worried the entire game was soft-locked by glitching my way to having the raven character way earlier than I should. Luckily, the game played out perfectly, and I was able to finish the game without issues. Well, at least without any more serious potential game-breaking bugs.
The story continued with me breaking out of jail and going to the Valley of Giants. Going through this path made me truly tired of how linear the game can be. Just follow the straight path and go different routes to collect items. Once you hit a snag in the path, you must battle with its admittedly dated system and continue on to a puzzle. The puzzles in the game are the main focus, with everything being window dressing. For the most part the puzzles are very easy but good. Where the game shines is just in the ambiance with the insane graphic quality and killer soundtrack.
However, the worst part of this journey comes in Round 2. It was the return of the absolutely stupid tower defense mini-game that had to be completed. I ranted about how stupid this was in my original video, but they bought it back much harder. It took me two days to beat the trash as a cannon game. The mechanics are bad, it doesn't feel like the triggers are there, and it's incredibly slow and tedious. I hate when games add twenty crappy mechanics to spice things up rather than truly expanding on one or two good ones. I can continue to rant and rave, but it's over, and I was able to beat the cannon.
After rescuing the giants, I had one final mission: getting a necklace from an evil angel woman. To do that, you play as the dark elf again and journey through this great labyrinth level to find and unlock different colored posts. This is the best level in the game, considering how many different puzzles you must solve and how many paths open up. Spoilers, but I have started playing Asgard's Wrath 2 by the time I write this review. It is much better in every way, and it seems they took some inspiration from this level when making the sequel.
Spoilers, but once you get the necklace and give the stone to Loki, he turns evil and tries to kill you. I know. Who would know that Loki isn't a trustworthy character! You must fight him in a decently exciting battle before he locks you in the tavern forever. I will say that the ending felt rushed and sucked. I finished the main story on day eighteen of my thirty days of playing and spent the rest trying to complete all side missions and combat arenas...
