FE Hack Reviews #8: Dream of Five (Revisited) by AstraLunaSol [CH 2] - Grindfest 2013
I get that this is still early in the game, but I find this chapter very weak, gameplay-wise.
Firstly, after you recruit Chester, there's absolutely nothing discouraging you from turtling. The bandits don't even go after the top right village, which would have otherwise been a good incentive to hustle.
Secondly, what's with the enormous number of ineffectual enemies? They're nothing but EXP fodder, and A LOT of it. It also doesn't help that the characters in this game have really high growth rates, so becoming overpowered very quickly is a problem that ends up biting the game in the rear (My chapter 3 footage is a perfect example of this).
A lot of people look at the growth rates of FE6 and FE7 and say "I don't want my hack to have growths like that", but I think the low growths were an intentional, good design decision. It requires more level ups until your units become overpowered, to the point where training a very small faction of units is detrimental unless you're playing on the lower difficulties. Not only that, but the games were clearly designed around that idea, because most of the units you recruit have good base stats, which helps make the game still possible to beat even in case you've been RNG screwed out the wazoo.
I don't expect this to get much harder at this rate, but for all I know, I could be talking out my ass right now and I'll be desperately clawing my way to victory. We'll see though.
