F.E.A.R. first playthrough
3I've somehow never played this game, despite having tried the Trepang2 demo and having played F.E.A.R. 2 a long time ago when OnLive was a thing.
The game ages pretty well graphically, although it requires a couple of patches (found on PCGamingWiki) to play well on modern systems/resolutions, and I used Magpie for borderless windowed mode (which wasn't perfect - for some reason it cut off the bottom 20 or so pixels on my screen while OBS was unaffected, making my ammo readout hard to read). I enjoyed the environments, although some might overstay their welcome. There are certainly parts that give off Half-Life or Doom 3 vibes.
In terms of actual gameplay... it pretty much feels like a monotonous spoopy CoD. It's extremely linear, with rather short forks or side paths to investigate for items and lore (in the form of phone messages). There's very little enemy variety. You're limited to carrying 3 weapons at once, which was unfortunate since at times I would've liked to try out another weapon but was more concerned about keeping enough ammo and long-range precision options at any given time.
Combat can be unforgiving even on moderate difficulty; the game clearly intends for you to take advantage of slow-motion as often as possible, and allows you to stockpile 10 medkits (effectively 500 health) to compensate for a few particularly troublesome stretches. Unfortunately, the tankier enemies seem designed to be utterly impossible unless you figure out how to cheese them.
I was also somewhat disappointed by the plot pacing. F.E.A.R. makes itself out to be a horror game, but it's a drip-feed most of the way, with the most interesting stuff happening in the last half hour of the entire game. I kind of feel like I just played 10 hours of setup for a sequel. (And yet most reviews point to the sequels not being as good as the first installment.)
