After finishing the LLNFV game in BoF3 (my first completed challenge in the period of last 8 months), I was thinking which halted challenge to go back to. Didn't get much feedback on it so I decided to resume the one challenge I started in the DS version of FF4 because it's the game where I've done the least in so far, and it gets tiring when you milk the same game for a long time for more challenges (though I'll still finish FF6 LLDF later). Basically, trying to take it one challenge at a time because switching from one to another means quickly forgetting where you are all the time, which is annoying in RPGs where memorisation plays such a role.
Just to remind you, MBO stands for Mandatory Battles Only, meaning in this playthrough of the game, we face the minimum number of battles necessary to complete the game. It is similar in spirit to an LLG in that you escape from random encounters and lack resources for boss battles, but in this variation you can't fight randoms even in cases when your levels are unaffected by it. The exp distribution is also different from one of an LLG, the exact opposite actually as you want to use the little exp you get to level up the permanently staying characters at the expense of the temporary ones.
In this battle though, I keep Yang and Kain alive, though the former doesn't end the game with the party (yeah, it's not like the GBA version) and the latter gets his level recalculated (actually, it's fixed) when he rejoins, so why do we do that here? Simply, there's another battle coming up immediately and we have no chances to heal in between these two fights. We want everybody alive and ready to act when it begins so killing off two crucial fighters for unimportant amounts of exp isn't a good idea.
Cecil has been given Draw Attacks and this means all physical attacks will hit him. This makes running away from randoms easy, but bosses don't use physicals much. It does affect other single-target techs the bosses use however, which is not always good actually.
Here we face Doctor Lugae and his robot Barnabas. Lugae is a senile dude that talks a lot but doesn't hurt us at all (yet, anyway), but he can heal his creation. Barnabas begins by attacking the old man but then targets his physicals at our party, i.e. Cecil who has Draw Attacks. Blink's evade takes care of it.
And that's it, lol. We should try to kill them at the same time because that gives more experience than any other scenario, including the special second Barnabas boss that is triggered when you ignore the doctor. Knowing how much HP these two have is a must to do it right, but really, summoning Ramuh after bluffing as Rydia, my wife, tears off a freaking lot of their HP.
The battle that follows immediately afterwards is hell, though.
