Nearing the finale of the challenge, we are now facing Chimera, the first boss in the last dungeon of the game, and a menacing one indeed.

Chimera has the strongest elemental magic of the three main elements at her disposal: Mjollnir (lightning-elemental), Blizzard (ice) and Inferno (fire), former targeting just one of our character and the latter two the entire party. Once again, magic is devastating at this point and having no access to Ivory Charms, two of which provide full elemental and status immunity, due to the NFV restriction, we struggle to fortify our elemental resistance.

And then there's Chimera's fearsome physical strength. She hits really hard. Even in a defensive formation (defence +25%), Chimera does 2x damage in comparison to Ryu's max HP and barely leaves Garr and Rei alive.

She also has Paralyzer, a unique move that does damage and stops the target's movement. Light Bangles or status inoculations do not protect from this special status, but fortunately it can be elevated with a Panacea item. Paralyzer is employed very generously until the boss reaches less than 1/4 HP (and she has 7500 HP).

One thing I haven't described yet is the availability of the Ladon master at this point of the game. He provides the apprentice with a +75% resistance to fire (and since Sun Mask adds another 50 that's full immunity for all characters) as well as a 1/4 chance of avoiding status or death (paralysis doesn't count as either). Garr has natural +50% fire resist so he's apprenticed under Meryleep for extra 10% Dodge. This takes care of Inferno for all three folks.

Blizzard can be absorbed with the help of Rings of Ice. We've had one since Momo's Tower but right in this dungeon Rei can steal more of these from Ice Drakes. Gotta love Rei. Ryu has 50% ice inoculation and survives Blizzard. Garr and Rei were inoculated to thunder instead.

For Mjollnir, we only have one Thunder Ring and I gave it to the best of our characters - Rei. Unlike Kaiser (or whatever other transformation, Kaiser just has the best elemental resistance of all the adequate dragon forms), Rei doesn't need a crapload of AP in order to deal impressive damage to the boss. All he needs is to go weretiger mode, and after some Shields using item magic we're safe to do that (with Influence of course).

The beginning of the battle is hard (as is the closing of it) - the physical attacks hurt if they connect. We use Rufad's Spears to cast Shield on the whole party. I believe 5 is the max and after that there's no effect. Much better than having Ryu cast Protect on a single target and far quicker (6 times as quick). A Rufad's Spear is a rare drop from the bulky random encounter Berserker, yes, the infamous robot. How did I beat Berserker? I'm not opening any new ground here, as this was carried out in an MDLLG before by Sailor Nemesis (who will hopefully post his FAQ of this LL variation on GameFAQs some time):

What worked for him, worked for me - Berserker can't possibly kill the party as long as we have enough Ammonia (a physical attack and an MT fire spell is all he has at his disposal). It's only a question of when he dies, and when that happens there's a low chance we'll get our spear. I'm not crazy enough to hunt down hundreds of these guys so I used a save state to get two of these a lot quicker as soon as I got him one hit to death.

Experienced players will notice that an Archmage has also been slain by me at this point. The said players also know it's impossible to lose to an Archmage unless you try too hard. I beat him using Thunder Warrior + 2x Focus + Aura, iirc, but it took a long time to get it right. I wasn't insane enough to kill any more Archmage but after the forced levelling from Arwan I might kill two more, or maybe not.
