FF8 (NLBNANGFNINR Challenge) Ep. 42 - Ultimecia (Final Form)
I cut the recording in between fights because the HP disappeared so i thought it was moving to a different fight. It turns out it's still technically the same fight as all of my buffs persisted in between the cutscene.
Ultimecia has a really high HP pool here so Meteor is really great here doing well over 10k each time i cast it. She likes to frequently put the party all at 1 HP. I'm not super aware of her AI, but i panic heal each time afterwards. (Not sure if it's a big deal. With Safer Sephiroth it literally doesn't matter how much hp you have.)
Once you kill her, you're still stuck fighting her and have to wait for all of her dialogue which takes a few extra turns, so you need to make sure to live through that, probably.
I kept the entire ending and credits, so enjoy that if you've never seen it.
Here are my final thoughts on this challenge and FF8 in general. I don't think that the challenge was very difficult. Even with so many restrictions, it basically meant nothing. It's so easy to get over powered in this game by abusing the junction system. I don't think it was balanced very well. I will say at the very least it was slightly harder than perhaps someone's first play through. But not really. I think if I would have forced enemies to be at their highest level, I perhaps would have struggled more.
As for FF8, maybe I like it a little more than previously. It's in my bottom 3 still. I found the story to be pretty middle of the road. Squall was pretty unlikable throughout most of the game. Overall I did enjoy the junction system and battle system. It's pretty interesting to play with. I just didn't really understand it as a kid. I found the bosses in the first 3 discs pretty dull and repetitive. They saved all of the good bosses for the end it seems.
One of my biggest gripes about FF8 is the world design. I found the world map to be horrible to navigate, and full of yucky colors. A lot of the field maps have areas you can interact with that you'd never even realize. The game could really benefit from ( ! ) bubble we got in FF9. They really didn't do much to make on screen objects stand out. It probably has to do with how overly compressed the game is in order to run it on PS1. (I should have played the remaster)
Anyway, finally crossed FF8 of my list. Just FF4, FF4 After Years, FF12 Revenant Wings and FF13: Lightning Returns remain. (LR is the most likely for me to try again)
