Ahhh, Mangy-tailed Marvin. This NM is what got me started on my insane idea of seeing how many things in XI I can solo as a WHM. I accidentally aggro'd this Rabbit when I was doing my Beast Killer trial for my OA2-4 weapon. Expecting to die horribly, I managed to out live this sucker and kill him, much to my own shock! Needless to say, I began to test what sort of bounds I could and could not survive afterward.

Mangy-tailed Marvin is a Rabbit NM found in Abyssea - La Theine. This NM is best taken with less people as he is a heavy hitter. A Whirl Claw against an unprepared party can do some significant damage to them all. Despite this, I found that his most damaging attacks were his normal attacks. Even against a level 90 target, this Rabbit can hit for 200 easily. Compound that with the fact that he has double and triple attack rounds, and you can easily see spikes of 500 to 700 damage per attack round. Yikes! Too add insult to injury, he can also use Wild Carrot to restore 2,000 to 3,000 HP each time.

As a WHM, this is a straight up battle of attrition. You need to outlast him and manage his spike damage accordingly. Try not to let yourself fall below a 1,200 to 1,500HP threshold if you can, as a triple attack followed by a Foot Kick TP attack can spell instant doom. If you're not afraid to use your MP, using Holy with a fully charged Afflatus Solace can help speed up the fight to some degree. It comes down to risk versus reward: is it worth using the MP to inflict a bit more damage to Marvin's life? That decision is up to each individual WHM.

Just be patient and play smart, and you will come out on top.
