To make this battle easier get the following before going to the Palace:

1) Make sure you have at least 5 Antidotes, 5 Phoenix Downs and 30 Potions. I had 99 of everything except Antidotes.

2) Buy a Silver Bow for Fran in Nalbina. Maker her the best damage dealer in the party.

3) Get as many Water Motes in the Westersand as you like. The quickest way to beat Firemane is to set your gambits to spam Water Motes, but I am not very keen on farming, so I just tossed a few with Vaan (you will want to save them for future bosses).

4) 2 Hastega Motes is suggested, I used one in this battle.

5) Buy Balthier and Fran their best light armour and helm in Nalbina. This can be done before the Mimic Queen and you can defeat Firemane just as easily without.

That's pretty much it.

This battle is not much harder than the one in a normal Low Level Game.

Vaan does by far the least damage, so I set his gambits to reviving and healing. I also equipped him the Goddess's magicite and had him tank during the battle to absorb all the damage.

You don't have to make an effort to win here, really, which is why I got really sloppy and careless towards the end where Firemane had not much more HP left.

Put the battle speed on slowest so that you can easily heal yourself with Potions without doing the equip/unequip "trick", and the gambits will do it for you. When she starts casting Bushfire have Vaan run away and stand alone from everyone else. That way you will only have to heal one character (as opposed to the entire party), since I think it does area damage.

That's it, an easy battle.
