Fields of Fortitude - March Coffee of the Month for Nancy Drew's Mystery of the Seven Keys
Have you ever kinda wanted to fill a mug from a nearby field and drink it up as coffee? Because now you can without your friends and family worrying about you, and also we promise it tastes better than you'd expect.
Fields of Fortitude
1/2 cup Water
2-3 Tbsp Brown Sugar
1/2 tsp. Molasses
4 Cloves
1 small (or most of 1 large) Star Anise
Seeds of 5 Green Cardamom pods (or 1/8 tsp ground Cardamom)
2 large sprigs fresh Rosemary, plus more for garnish
Earthy coffee- the earthier the better (We used the Columbia roast by Global Vistas that is out of stock at the moment. Trusting they will eventually restock for anyone craving the taste of dirt, the link is included at the bottom!)
Half and Half
Slightly crush the star anise and the cardamom seeds. Combine the water, sugar, molasses, cloves, star anise, cardamom, and rosemary in a small pot. Bring to a boil then turn off the heat, cover, and steep for 15 minutes.
Brew a double shot of espresso using your coffee grounds. If brewing without an espresso maker, make about 1/2 cup strong coffee. Steam and froth the half and half. Strain the spiced syrup and combine 3-4 tsp. of the syrup with the coffee and the half and half. Garnish with a small sprig of fresh rosemary and relax after a hard morning working in your fields.

If the Columbia roast isn't restocked and you want that earthy flavor, try going with a coffee that smells a bit like potting soil directly from the bag. This coffee smells very earthy before ever brewing it, which was part of why we chose this particular coffee for this recipe. Sumatra coffees have a reputation for being very earthy, but either smell them or read reviews first, because in our experience with some brands the earthiness isn't always noticeable. But smelling all of the coffees in the aisle is part of the fun in trying new blends! Let us know what coffees all of you try down below. :)
P.S. We were right- the syrup is great in tea as well!
