When fighting on ledges and cliffsides it's important to be aware of your roll distance and in DeS it's also important to note the limited directions of locked on rolling. Most of the time it isn't too much of a problem but once you start to move in one direction and then roll in another or you spam rolls it becomes apparent why it's a good habit to unlock when needed.

For those unaware, rolling while locked on in DeSR is limited to 8 directions (cardinal and ordinal directions) so playing unlocked is not just useful for crit fishing but also for not rolling off to an early death. For those wondering, the original PS3 version of DeS only had 4 way directional rolling (cardinal directions) when locked on.
