Stuck between the warring, conquering empires of Archadia and Rozarria, sits the small kingdoms of Dalmasca and Nabradia. To fortify their realms, Princess Ashe of Dalmasca and Prince Rasler of Nabradia have wed, uniting the two peaceful lands.
But the evil Archadian Empire, hell-bent on conquering all of Ivalice, has invaded the united countries. Prince Rasler is killed and his city of Nabudis is destroyed in a single explosion. Archadian officials have announced that Princess Ashe has committed suicide, ending the war.
Lead behind-the-scenes by the maniacal Vayne Carudas Solidar, the Archadian Empire is determined to get their hands on magicites for secret research being conducted by the evil Doctor Cidolfus Demen Bunansa. Though his true and closest friends just call him Cid.
Nearly two years later, Vaan, a street thief from the Dalmascan city of Rabanastre, has vowed to take revenge on the Archadians for the death of his brother, Reks… by killing every sewer rat in the game, but also by stealing! The perfect opportunity presents itself as Vaan sneaks into the Royal Palace of Rabanastre during a celebration for Vayne Solidar, the new consulate, and happens upon -- you guessed it -- magicite!
Naturally, Vaan gets more than he bargained for in a weird, mysterious stone as the Palace is the perfect place for an impressionable teen to get swept up in the Dalmascan Resistance and political intrigue.
