At the beginning of the pre-order trailer for Sonic Mania, Sonic is being drawn to life, and given bunny ears before being quickly erased. This is a reference to Sonic's origins -- before he became a hedgehog, Sonic was a rabbit called Feel.

The infomercial for the Collector’s Edition of Sonic Mania lists the price as $6,231,991 dollars. Since the Collector’s Edition will actually cost $69.99 it’s likely the fake price is a reference to the original release date of Sonic. June 23rd, 1991.

Designer Hirokazu Yasuhara, was only able to work on the game because of the first Gulf War. Yasuhara was originally tasked with starting a new R&D team in America, but Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait postponed his trip and freed him up for other work. Lead Programmer Yuji Naka and character designer Naoto Ohshima recruited him as a level designer -- he never ended up going to America and instead designed the classic Sonic stages we know and love.

Sonic’s first ever appearance in a video game was not Sonic the Hedgehog, but 1990’s Rad Mobile. The game was released for the Sega System 32 and was a first person racing game. Sonic can be seen as an air-freshener hanging in the rear view window.

During development, Sonic was intended to have a love interest named Madonna who would chase Sonic around throughout the game. Originally it was thought that Madeline Schroeder from Sega of America removed her from the finale release to “soften the game” for the non-Japanese audience, but in 2011 Yuji Naka stated that she was removed because it was a cliché to feature the damsel in distress, but maybe-probably because of Mario.
