In 2008, Sonic super-fan and game developer, Christian “Taxman” Whitehead, created the Retro Engine, which he then used to create Retro Sonic, one of the most popular Sonic fan games ever.
Whitehead later used his Retro Engine and teamed up with fellow super-fan and dev Stealth, Simon Thomley, creator of the SonEd hacking tools and Project Mettrix, to produce a proof-of-concept video showing Sega's 1993 release, Sonic CD, running on an iPhone.
Sega quickly sent a cease and desist letter to Whitehead, who took the demo down. Surprisingly, Sega had a mysterious change of heart, and two years later, recruited Taxman and Stealth to officially release the port across multiple platforms. They continued their alliance and developed the retro engine remakes of Sonic and Sonic 2 in 2013.
Following that success, the fan duo joined up with PagodaWest Games to pitch Sega a 2D Sonic game in the vein of the original entries: Sonic Discovery.
And with that, all their years of hard work and dedication to The Blue Blur culminated in Takashi Iizuka simply saying “I have so many questions.” The Sonic boss sent them to lunch while he thought it over. Though, when they returned, Iizuka took out a whiteboard, wrotethe original Sonic game titles, and finally ended with... Sonic Mania—By the mania, for the mania.
