Crash Bandicoot was one of the first 3D platform games released and it was truly unique in its decision to change the player’s POV to behind Crash, compared to the side scrolling view of Mario or Sonic. This change in viewpoint lead the developers to give the game the working title of, ‘Sonic’s Ass Game.”
Aku Aku, the floating witch doctor mask that follows Crash and gives him aid, was named after a Polynesian restaurant in Boston, the game’s creators frequented.
Crash Bandicoot’s difficulty is the reason we have DDA, or Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment, in video games today. In the Crash sequels, DDA assisted players by giving them bonus hit points and extra checkpoints if they kept dying. DDA has been used in games like Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, and more!
There is who sub-species of bandicoot named after Crash. The character brought so much attention to the species that when scientists discovered fossilized remains of a previously unknown bandicoot, they named it Crash Bandicoot.
The character of Ripper Roo, known for his trademark laugh, is actually just a re-tuned recording of Dallas McKennon’s iconic laugh as the Hyena in Disney animated classic, The Lady and the Tramp.
