Final Fantasy 7 Ruby Weapon guide: Easy strategy and best Materia setup explained
Ruby Weapon is one of several ‘superbosses’ in Final Fantasy 7, and can be encountered from Disc 2 onwards from the Gold Saucer desert - just bump into Ruby with a Chocobo or the Highwind to begin.
To defeat Ruby Weapon, you need to keep the boss paralysed throughout, otherwise it will retaliate with Ultima with every Summon you cast.
To paralyse Ruby Weapon, either level up Hades or stock up on Dazers - an item which can be found near the Forgotten Capital by defeating the Boundfat enemy: https://youtu.be/fD1wc9DMNwI
You also need:
- Fire-absorbing or nullifying equipment to defend against many of its attacks
- Ribbons to defend against status effects
- This strategy recommends having Hades, W-Summon, Phoenix (with Final Attack if possible), Knights of the Round, Mime and W-Item
- Megalixors are also ideal. You can get more of these - as well as Dazers - easily by using the W-Item glitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UElhT3IY_1M
The strategy is as follows:
1) First, enter the battle with only one party member alive. This stops an attack which removes party members from battle.
2) Start by casting Hades and Phoenix with W-Summon. Hades will paralyse Ruby, so when you cast Phoenix and revive the party, Ruby cannot attack with Ultima.
3) From here, the strategy is to have one party member use one Dazers on Ruby, before another casts Knights of the Round with W-Summon, which is then repeated again with Mime.
4) Repeat this process - stunning with Dazers then W-Summon and Mime - until defeated. It’s recommended to also use a Megalixor alongside Dazer with W-Item to heal your party regularly.
Other notes:
- Ignore the tentacles and focus on Ruby Weapon, as your Megalixors should cover for any HP or MP loss they incur.
- It’s highly recommended to Ribbon equipped on each party member. If you don’t have enough Ribbons - as I did! - use Remedies or the White Wind Enemy Skill to heal your party.
- Be sure to use a Dazer right before Knights of the Round so you can get four attacks in (factoring in W-Summon and one Mime) before Ruby can cast Ultima in retaliation.
- Though you could Mime it a second time, the Ultima attack is very powerful, and two in a row could wipe your party.
- If you run out of Knights of the Round casts (as I did) then continue using other powerful attacks until Ruby Weapon is defeated. If you have Mimed 2-3 times, Ruby won’t have much health remaining.
- It’s recommended to pair Phoenix with Final Attack to give you a safety net in case your party is wiped.
- Having Hades and Added Effect paired on a weapon is also another way of paralysing Ruby Weapon, but in my experience, it was too inconsistent, so I focused on using Dazers.
- The reward for defeating Ruby Weapon is a Trophy / Achievement, and the Desert Rose item, which you can trade with the Kalm Traveller for a Gold Chocobo.
