Final Fantasy 7 Emerald Weapon guide: Easy strategy and best Materia setup explained
Emerald Weapon is one of several ‘superbosses’ in Final Fantasy 7, and can be encountered when you unlock the Submarine from Disc 2 onwards.
The easiest way to defeat Emerald Weapon is to have W-Summon, Knights of the Round and three Mime Materia - one per character. (This means you must Master Mime twice.)
The strategy is for one character to cast Knights of the Round twice using W-Summon. Then, each character each casts Mime, repeating the attack.
As well as this, you also want someone with Phoenix and Final Attack. This means if you are wiped, everyone will be back in the fight.
Another Materia that's recommended is Underwater. This is acquired by a sidequest from the Kalm Traveller. This removes the 20 minute timer so you can have as long as you need: https://youtu.be/xHTbnyAX7CQ
HP Plus is also recommended to give your health a top up, and MP Plus if MP is on the low side, too.
Some notes:
- Mime will repeat whatever the last action was - so only use it following Knights of the Round. This includes the original caster. This also means if you break the Mime ‘chain’ - i.e. if you need to heal or Phoenix is used - then you need to cast Knights of the Round again as normal before Miming it.
- The more you level up Knights of the Round, Phoenix and Final Attack, the more times in the battle it can be used outside of Mime, giving you more chances to come back after wiping and to return to that strategy.
- This is also important as you want to keep as few Materia equipped as possible. The Aire Tam Storm attack will be based on the number of Materia equipped. The less you have, the less damage will be inflicted. So if you keep it to the key Materia above, this attack is easier to survive.
- It’s worth pairing Knights of the Round with MP Turbo. It’ll use more MP, but it’ll be more powerful.
- If possible, be as high a level as possible will help you with this fight. Though there’s no recommendation, this party was in the high 80s, early 90s.
- When healing, don’t less around - use an Megalixir. Emerald Weapon can hit your entire party quickly if you aren’t fast enough, including draining MP, and resorting to this covers all bases. As you’ll see in the video, I hesitated using them in the battle a few times, as well as starting the Knights of the Round Mime chain again, and I think luck / having high levels only saved me from wiping out.
- Though not essential, Enemy Skill Big Guard (which casts Haste and Barriers) is useful before Mime rounds, just to give you a little buffer.
- For beating Emerald Weapon, you receive a Trophy / Achievement, and the Earth Harp item. Take this to the Kalm Traveller to receive three Master Materia. This includes a Master Summon - unlocking the Transcendant Convoker Trophy in the process.
