Everyone is in the back row, has Gamble Defense, HP+10&20% (where available), Auto-Haste, and Auto-Regen equipped. Quina has Loudmouth activated as well.

The Friendly Yan's stats are MAXED OUT!, meaning the only way to deal big doses of damage is using fixed damage. Not even Grand Lethal, Shock, and Ark's Eternal Darkness can scratch him. Also the Friendly Yan counters every time you damage him, and once he asks for a Diamond five times, he will then attack you once his ATB is full from that point on.

The main way to survive his BAHHH! attack is to have your HP high, and your party be in the back row, since the attack is a physical one. Quina's Mighty Guard and defending really comes in handy to cut down on the damage even more.

It is possible to use the Friendly Yan to acquire Rosetta Rings without having to synthesize them, and get up to 100 AP (with Ability Up) for unlearned abilities, but the effort you have to put in probably isn't worth it in the long run. The Crystal World is the next best place for AP in that case.
