Final Fantasy VI | Part 9: A Short-Lived Truce
Product provided in this video by Square-Enix. This is part of my purpose to playthrough all six of these.
If you saw from the previous part, the Empire wants to end the war by forming a truce with the Espers. You can probably guess where this will go.
But in case you don't want to, here's what happened. Terra, Locke, Celes and Shadow head to the village of Thamasa. It's here we meet Strago Magus, a descendant of a group of magic users that were hunted down 1000 years ago. Not only that but we meet his granddaughter Relm Arrowny. She seems to take a liking for Interceptor, something Shadow doesn't like. That night, a house gets caught on fire and it's here the secret is revealed. Thamasa is home to the descendants of magic users that were hunted down.
So Terra, Locke and Celes work with Strago to save Relm. That requires Ice attacks by the way. Plus Strago is a blue mage and he has Aqua Breath. Eventually they save Relm and Shadow comes in with the clutch. The following day: Strago takes Terra, Locke and Celes up north and it's here we learn about the Warring Triad. At the dawn of time, the Triad went to war with one another out of fear. Mortals caught in the struggle became Espers and forced to fight as slaves. Seeing the destruction caused by their own actions, they chose to seal themselves into statues. They were arranged in a way that they would always face each other, as a precaution... to keep themselves in check.
Of course, Ultros has to come in and ruin the fight. We fight him and then Relm drives him off. They end up meeting one of the espers Yura who offers to bring peace along with the Empire. But that peace... was a facade. Kefka and his army show up ready to capture the Espers, turning them into Magicite. Only Leo stands in his way and yes, you get to play as him. Sadly the Kefka he fought was an illusion and ends up dying, realizing that the peace he wanted was a cover for Gestahl to obtain more power.
After his death, Terra and his allies knew that all of it was a trap. Made worse was that Kefka and Gestahl reach the Sealed Gate. Inside are the three statues and in turn, a part of the land mass splits from the southern continent and heads into the sky. The end is near.
Part 10 is where the Returners make their last stand in the Floating Continent.
