The last of the four fiends offers an astounding spike in difficulty, all four of its special moves wiping out the party in a single turn and the only normal attack giving us a breather. Repeated Giant's Tonic usage followed by restoration to full health via X-Potion before any of these attacks (Thunderbolt, Blaze, Icestorm, Poison Gas) are used is the only way to survive here. Equipment protecting us against elements may halve the damage incurred, but we're still taking up 5x our HP in damage.
The RNG involved in this battle is first of all surviving the first turn. It may involve the Attack command being used and not targeting the Knight, who generally dies when defending anyway, or the boss getting unlucky and moving after my party, at which point we hopefully have used at least one Giant's Tonic and then recovered HP, though that puts us back into KO range next turn. Another unfortunate occurrence is the X-Potion taking precedence over the tonics in turn order. There's nothing to do but reset and try again.
I did try to keep the Red Wizards alive for this strategy to work, but quickly found the rate at which MT magic is spammed to be far too high. Getting the Knight to 999 HP and ignoring the rest of the party appears to lead to the best possible outcome, as there is no way you can die at this level of max health, and sustaining sufficient HP to not die next turn is easy enough if you consider 300 HP as the benchmark of risk.
Not having the other party members around does mean buffing is slower (though you could argue the battle ends up shorter nonetheless because only one characters gets to act and be assigned an action), but not by much, and certainly less troublesome.
So it's a lvl 1 Knight solo, and almost certainly not the last battle of this kind in this challenge run, though I'm hoping for more favourable conditions for a full-party strategic effort in many of the battles that still remain.
But first, I've got to farm some X-Potions! My stock ran dry after this fight, and let me tell the drop rates are just abysmal in Pixel Remaster...
