The second inescapable battle in the run is the fight against the nine pirates. Our victory here gets us access to the ship, which doesn't quite open very much of the world, but whatever. Story progression is still in motion.

I show my gear before the battle starts once again. The warrior has some heavy equipment to sponge enemy attacks, and the red mage is not too far behind. In the battle showcased in the video, both are capable of absorbing blows until the fight is over, mostly because it doesn't last long enough for the 1 damage hits to pile up and do us in.

The two white mages on the other hand are much squishier and can easily die to around three enemy attacks. There's really no detriment to the white mages dying, as the 0 exp boost setting being in effect means we couldn't care less who's going to emerge alive at the end of the fight - the rewards are the same regardless of whether there are casualties, but a single casting of Blink (which can only be cast on the user) goes a long way to ensure their survival, letting two of them gang up to get an extra kill, leading to a quicker rout.

The longsword that we reset for Garland to drop is overkill here, but that won't be the case in the next storyline battles, which are all very difficult indeed.
