This is video #051 in my Final Fantasy VII playthrough. With Dyne's death, the ringleader in Corel Prison, Mr. Coates, introduces Cloud to a Chocobo race manager, Ester. In the Chocobo Racing lounge, be sure to pick up that Ramuh materia. Then, it's time for the race!
During the race, you can use Select to put the chocobo on manual control. Hold down the R1 and R2 buttons to keep the chocobo's stamina gauge from depleting, and hold the Square button to accelerate to top speed. Don't worry about any of the fool chocobos that zip past you during the first part of the race, they'll just be wasting their stamina. When you have gone past the large oysters and the rainbow-colored tunnel, hold the Circle button to dash to the end. You shouldn't have any problem winning this race.
When the race is won, the party is free and gets a very useful gift to boot: the buggy. It will allow the party to ford rivers and cross the Corel Desert. There are many side things available now.
