Previously, after starting the game, the party pushed their poor, broken-down car to the Hammerhead outpost. As part of the story quest "The Pauper Prince", Cindy assigned them to take out three packs of pests in the wild while her grandfather, Cid, repars the car.

Resuming in Hammerhead, the party sets off southwest into the wilds. They soon run into their first group of pests (time 0:59). It is a pack of Reapertails. It is essentially a tutorial in basic fighting.

Near this group, the party finds a leaning telegraph pole (time 2:15). It appears some problem has struck the local poles.

In a generic battle, the player earns the trophy "Brother-in-Arms" the first time Noctis tells a party member to use a technique (time 3:31).

The second group of Reapertails is located to the northwest of the first group (time 4:34). In this one Noctis is encouraged to land warp-strikes on enemies. After the battle, the party will discuss Noct's future plans.

Farther northwest, the party finds the third and final group of Reapertails (time 6:27). Should be pretty easy. Prompto's Piercer ability reaches Level 2 when he uses it.

Afterwards, Cindy calls Noctis (time 7:35). He's getting pretty good reception. The quest "The Pauper Prince" is complete. Each party member earns 100 EXP. Then, Cindy issues another quest, "Hunter Becomes the Hunted". She wants them to search for a hunter named Dave in a nearby abandoned shack in the Three Valleys. The shack is just next to the Three Valleys parking spot.

Under the Exploration portion of Ascension, the party picks up Roadrunning for 32 AP (time 9:54). This allows them to gain AP while riding in the car. The player earns the trophy "New Power" for learning their first Ascension ability.

South of the shack, the party finds the Merrioth Haven campground. They pick up some elemental energy at the three elemental deposits around the camp. At the camp, they choose to wait until morning (time 11:12).

Under Elemancy, the party crafts some Fire spells (time 11:40). For crafting a spell the first time, the player earns the trophy "Magical Worker".

At the base of a tree north of the shack, there are food spots (time 12:43). They yield Leiden Peppers. Ignis will be able to use these as ingredients while cooking, and as he acquires ingredients, he may formulate new recipes.

In the marked cabin at the Three Valleys, the party finds a note on a cart (time 13:41). It notes the sighting of a mutant Dualhorn codenamed Bloodhorn. After reading it, the party will be set upon by a group of Sabertusks. They must defeat them to secure the shack.

For using magic the first time, the player earns the trophy "Black Mage".

After the battle, Gladio notices a nearby shack to the west (time 15:05). They must check over there next.

The party approaches the shack to find Sabertusks swarming the exterior (time 15:57). Ignis will recommend that Noctis point-warp to the windmill and strike the Sabertusks from there.

When Noctis point-warps the first time, the player earns the trophy "Just Hangin' Around". Then a little later, the party scores their first blindside link, and the player earns the trophy "Blind Spot".

Once the battle is over, a man will emerge from the cabin (time 18:12). It is the Dave that Cindy was looking for. The quest "Hunter Becomes the Hunted" is complete, and each party member earns 150 EXP. The unfortunate fellow sprained his ankle. When he asks Noctis to take care of the strong monster in the area, Noctis chooses, "Do it for a price". Dave gives the party Magic Flask #02. The flask comes pre-filled with some Fire spells. Because of Noctis's choice, the party also earns 2 AP. The story quest "The Mutant Marauder" begins. The target is located some distance to the north of the cabin.

Under Magic in Ascension, the party acquires Elementalism for 24 AP (time 19:42). This allows them to absorb more energy from elemental deposits.

Ignis speaks up as the party heads away from the shack (time 19:56). He suggests they rest at the nearby haven before going to face the foe. Not a bad idea.

Along the exterior of Dave's cabin, there is a Fossil Wood (time 20:56).

At Merrioth Haven, Noctis chooses to set up camp (time 22:22). Really? Product placement of real-world brands in a high fantasy RPG? Whatever. Anyway, Ignis cooks up some Veggie Medley Stew. After the experience is tallied, the party can pick and choose which photographs to save for later.
