Your final year of university is an exciting time, with lots of possibilities open to you after graduation. However, between your academic work, extracurricular activities and job hunting, it’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed at times. The Careers Service recognises that your time at university has been challenging, and that you may need extra support as you plan your next steps after your degree.
My university experiences thus far have been amazing. I have learned and experienced so many new things in such a short period of time, and it has gone by so fast. I have made many new friends from many different backgrounds. There are Vietnamese and Singaporean students on my floor in residence and that has allowed me an insight into their cultures.
My classes are great and I enjoy every one of them, especially biology. The depth and detail of what we are leaning is far beyond my high school experience. It is just amazing to think that even the tiniest details on the subatomic level can have such a huge impact. My physics class is also interesting because it is physics for the Life Sciences. In high school we discussed mechanical aspects of physics, but now we are relating them to organisms and movement. It has made me realize how everything action is related to forces. That is probably the best part of university. It introduces so many new concepts that changes our view of the world. I am also taking introductory Chinese, which I greatly enjoy. Learning a new language is challenging but it is very rewarding. The course load is intense, so time management is key.
As the result, I realize that my biggest weakness is my academic writing skills, and it is obvious that I have to do a large number of essays when I am at university as they are the main assessed mark. For that reason, I have to improve my academic skills by many ways like:
Read more guide books about writing skills at university to help increase my academic words, and how to use them efficiently in the essay as I can find many examples in those books.
Read more books about my subject like finance or business, and even newspaper to help improve my ability to analyze the data and have a wider range of knowledge to be able to develop the quality of the essay.
Find someone with high result to reflect the essay together and pay attention on what they have that I don’t have. Listen to their opinion about my work, and try to improve it base on their comments.
Scan the essay several time before hand it in to check if there is any mistake and see if it makes sense. Especially try to pay attention to the second part of the essay more as I always neglect it.
First, my experience in college has given me a chance to sharpen my skills in my field of choice. There have been, and there will continue to be, many opportunities to learn more ways of improving my craft as a result of my time in school, which I am truly thankful for. For example, the Writing Center at my school has taught me many writing tips and rules that I was unaware even existed, and would still be unaware of had it not been a part of my experience. Because of this, I realized I still had a lot to learn despite what I thought; but this allows me to improve my skills more as I continue to attend school and also gives me more confidence in my area. And as a result, I know one day this valuable experience will help me in my search for another one-a rewarding career.
In addition to learning practical skills, being in college has also taught me a lot about social sciences such as sociology and history. For instance, I have had the privilege of learning about religions in unfamiliar parts of the world, such as Buddhism and Islam, that I had no knowledge of beforehand. From this experience, I have learned many interesting things about the cultures in which these religions are typically followed. Learning about many different religious ideas and practices in other areas of the world, like meditation, reincarnation, and the worshipping of multiple deities, has been valuable to me because it has cleared up some misconceptions I had, thus allowing me to be less ignorant on the topic. It has also given me a better understanding of others’ beliefs and traditions, no matter what region of the world they originated. This has made my time in college much more enriching and worthwhile.
