Fire Emblem Path of Radiance: Challenge Run (Endgame, Ashnard Battle)
It's the battle of the century: Ike and Nasir vs The Mad King. (With moral support from Giffca, who never got to do anything)
Yeah... this fight. I had a strategy in place for this, one I had planned since I started the playthrough. I did some calculations, and it turns out Nasir with Resolve doubles Ashnard doing 20 damage per hit. That's enough to knock off half his HP in one round! I couldn't combo it with Wrath, but I did have a Provoke scroll handy. What could possibly go wrong?
You can't tell from this video but... a lot, actually. I had a horribly failed attempt before this, and I'm glad it DID fail, as the battle ended up going on for over an hour. Basically, the one flaw in my plan, something I NEVER saw coming was... Nasir gaining Defence. Okay, you're probably confused, so let me explain. In my last run, Nasir leveled up. He now had 60 HP and 31 Defence. Berserk Ashnard has 60 attack exactly. 60-31 is... 29, leaving Nasir JUST out of Resolve range. This means it takes him 2 turns to become a threat, which means 2 turns for his transform guage to drop. And an untransformed Nasir is GUARANTEED to die to Ashnard if he gets attacked. Which he will, seeing as I gave him provoke.
So what happened in my failed run was just that. Nasir ran out of transform guage and Laguz Stones, so my trump card was pretty much out. Giffca was forced to rescue him... which let Ashnard double him. I'll spare you the details, but this did not end well.
So why did this run go so much better? Simple, I held off using Nasir before Ashnard, so he wouldn't level up and gain Defence. (With a 60% growth I wasn't going to risk it) Yep folks, sometimes GAINING a stat can be bad for you! How's that for learning something new?? With one less Defence, one hit from Ashnard puts Nasir in Resolve range, and Ashnard proseeds to lose half his HP. Simple.
And Nasir was really the real hero here. Ike... was kind of a disappointment. You'll see. But to be honest, I always kinda hoped it would end with this way. "Dragons are known for their wrath" indeed. So I kinda felt the need to give his Resolve Mode its own theme song. Despite the name, I found "Dragon Slayer" from Sonic and the Black Knight particularly appropriate. It just has that FE feel to it.
But there was another hero of this fight... Marcia. The failed run taught me another valuable lesson... KILL THE BISHOP ON THE BALCONY WITH A FLYER ASAP. Seriously, i cannot stress this enough. With constant healing, Ashnard can last for a LOOOOOONG time. The other strategy is to lure him out of the Bishop's range, but that entails... other risks, and puts him closer to your squishy healers.
With the Mad King down, the first battle for Tellius is over. But is this the end of the journey for the six? You'll have to wait and see...
