First Impressions On: Front Mission Evolved
[Released September 28, 2010]
On this episode of First Impressions, I take a look at the recent third person shooter reboot of the tactical Front Mission series, Front Mission Evolved. The game's only real tie to previous entries in the series is the focus on Wanzers, the Japanese-style bipedal humanoid mechs. However, the transition from grid-based tactical strategy to third-person mech combat seems to have been a rough one. While the mechs themselves control fairly well and are even surprisingly mobile at times, the environments are bland and lacking in any sort of tactical options. You are basically pushed down a linear path into a series of confrontations without much choice. Mech customization, one of the most important parts of a mech game, seems to be fairly lacking, and not nearly deep enough to be particularly interesting. Overall I'd say there are plenty of better options for mech games, like any of the Armored Core games.
