183Flip and Flop (also known as Flip & Flop) is an isometric action-platformer originally developed by Jim Nangano and released by First Star Software for the Atari in 1983, with a Commodore 64 version following in 1984 via State Soft.
You alternate control between two characters—Flip the kangaroo and Mitch the ape—across separate levels. The goal is to navigate 3D-style platforms, climb ladders, and flip over marked tiles, all while evading a pursuing zookeeper or a creeping net depending on the character.
Gameplay centres on flipping all designated tiles by hopping onto them, sometimes requiring a second jump on higher levels. Sticky tiles act as temporary traps, briefly immobilising your pursuer and offering a moment's respite to plan your next move.
Every five levels, you’re treated to a short circus-themed interlude, giving a playful break before the challenge ramps up. As you progress, layouts become more intricate, the flipping mechanics more demanding, and eventually, the sticky tiles are removed altogether—forcing sharper strategy and quicker reflexes.
The game boasts colourful isometric visuals and a catchy SID-based soundtrack composed by Jerry White. Drawing inspiration from arcade titles like QBert*, Flip & Flop layers its simple premise with enough depth to keep things engaging. Upon release, it was met with praise—German magazine 64’er even hailed it in 1984 as “the best example of the genre.”
Today, Flip & Flop is fondly remembered for its clever design, nostalgic tunes, and steadily increasing difficulty. It still holds a respected place among Commodore 64 and retro gaming enthusiasts alike.
