This game is known for its randomness and brutal difficulty, and while the brutal difficulty isn't a factor because I run on easy, the randomness certainly is. This run definitely had some god tier RNG. I got 2 flight computers from the first UFO, meaning that I only needed one landed small scout or crashed medium scout to get the other 2 flight computers needed. I technically didn't even need power sources from the UFOs because the alien base always has enough.
I was really tight on weapon fragments, actually. You need 75 to research New Fighter Craft, and I had 76. I got 2 easy abductions, so I got lucky to get a very hard abduction with engineers in the second month. Without that, I wouldn't have had enough fragments. Alternatively, if I'd had one more pod of Chrysalids in the alien base, I wouldn't have had enough. It also meant I only just got SHIV Laser done right before the end.
I should note that I used the XCOM Heroes in this run, which the previous record didn't do. I'm not sure why they didn't do it, they must have known about it. It's not cheating in my books. It may be by the game's definition, as it does disable achievements, but for a speedrun it should be fair game.
It also allows me to skip psi research, and Sid Meier is powerful enough to solo the final boss.
