Fort McAllister State Park - Ruff Road Campground Review - a Georgia State Park near Richmond Hill
2020 Journey: Fort McAllister State Park - Ruff Road Campground Review - a Georgia State Park near Richmond Hill
COVID Closures: Contact the ranger's office directly for info on how to access the fort or any COVID related changes or closures.
Dog owners beware, there are deer everywhere! They were in front of our RV, beside our RV, and behind our RV. We had one rerouted dog walk because they were beside the road and crossing the road. Terra just can't handle it and although Luna does a little better, there were still meltdowns all around. So we headed for the woods and the Magnolia Trail. Nope, deer there and armadillos. Needless to say, Gary and I have increased our upper body strength after our brief stay here at Ft. McAllister State Park.
What we loved about Ft. McAllister State Park:
1. Our campsite: We had a pull through site with 50 amp, water, and sewer overlooking the Redbird Creek marsh. We recommend Site #2 but there are other nice sites along the marsh.
2. The marsh: Beautiful and peaceful area for an evening stroll. There are benches and a little fishing dock to watch the sunset if you choose.
3. The history: Although we didn't get to visit the museum or fort during our stay, we read about the history of the area. History happened here.
4. Scenic: From the trails to the marsh to the moss draped giant oaks and magnolias to the broad sparkling Ogeechee River, you'll enjoy just being here and absorbing all of this beauty. Throw in some birdsong and a light salty breeze...just about perfect.
5. Recreation: Water, woods, camping, close to Savannah, Georgia- What's not to like? Here you can fish, hike, bike, kayak, boat, sightsee, or just be.
6. Easy access from I-95
7. Big rig friendly
8. Peaceful campground
9. Large campsites, pull- through sites
10. Wildlife viewing
11. Verizon service worked great!
What we didn't love about Ft. McAllister State Park:
1. Gravel, sand, or grass sites - not a deal breaker but just be aware.
2. Cost of sites were higher than we would like, plus there is a vehicle fee that Georgia State Parks charges in addition to the campsite fee. Still, compared to private parks with sewer the cost is not out of line.
3. Lack of privacy between sites, however sites are huge!
