Fortnite News: Beta Release Date, New Gameplay, Three Classes
Fortnite has been quiet with just a few private alpha tests, but a new trailer has finally surfaced. Fortnite is a mix of Minecraft and Team Fortress style gameplay with the high action shooting that Epic games is known for. This game is unique because the maps are procedurally generated environments taking place in a forest, a city, or even a small town.
The goal is to build a secure fort and that requires resource gathering and teamwork. Unlike Minecraft, you aren't building from scratch. You start by building an Atlas which provides power and you absolutely must protect it from hordes of enemies.
The game gives you starting structures so the building process moves faster than a crafting game. Each individual piece like a wall or door goes up with just a click of a button. But there is a ton of customization for traps and different fort layouts. Epic is focusing on balancing the game between fort building and the actual shooting. And forts are unique to each game.
There's several different classes including Ninja, Commando, and Constructor. Ninjas hack and slash enemies at close range and are cable of jumping in and out of battle quickly. Commandos are for the shooting experts. They rack up the kills with ranged weapons. And the Constructor can also fight, but builds faster and cheaper than any other class. They also repair structures that have been damaged by the horde. So all classes are essential to survival.
Fortnite is a very interesting game because it includes base building and crafting in a fast shooter. And they haven't missed the action elements. There are some really interesting looking weapons from rockets to shotguns and most of them have futuristic fantasy style. There's also crazy melee weapons like machetes and huge hammers.
The environments are probably the most impressive part of Fortnite. The maps look very open and the verticality of the forts is impressive. The ability to make complex forts introduces a lot of strategy and makes this game go beyond tower defense. It gives you a starting point, but at the same time leaves base building very open.
And the animation is very lively. Nothing looks static. The way enemies come in and the way your characters move is immersive and reinforces the fun fantasy combat. And don't be fooled, enemies do get a lot larger and tougher as you progress.
The game is still intended to be Free To Play by Epic Games. So hopefully there will be a good sense of progression and different items to chase after. There is a beta scheduled for release on both PC and Mac in Fall 2015 so you definitely want to keep your eyes on the Fortnite website. They currently have an alpha signup, but it's really tight not a lot of people can get in. They also do developer streams from time to time which is great for those guided walkthroughs of gameplay updates straight from the makers of the game.
I'll let you watch the complete trailer up next. Are you looking forward to Fortnite or do you think it looks like an imitation of similar games? Let us know in the comments. Subscribe to the skilled youtube channel for more upcoming game previews.
