Battleborn Trailer & Update: 25 Unique Characters, Incursion Mode + 2 More
52We've got a few new details to talk about in Battleborn. Maybe you've forgotten because there hasn't been a ton of news about this game, but it's Gearbox's multiplayer shooter that's kind of like a first person shooter moba hybrid. Think of Borderlands, but in a big team based versus mode.
It is multiplayer focused but it will have a story mode that can be played alone or cooperatively. The story mode can be played with up to five people online or in splitscreen. It will be modular which means players can replay certain missions for a chance to get better loot. For the loot hunters, there will be plenty of gear to hunt for. Chasing after better gear is the most addicting part of these games. The setting of Battleborn is essentially about the last survivors of the sentient races in the universe, fighting it out for the last star to save the universe. Gearbox has not claimed this as a Borderlands sequel so that means that the gameplay will be very different, but will hopefully build a similar multiplayer community.
Also like Borderlands, there will be many NPCs to interact with that give you missions and have their own unique characteristics. Despite this being a multiplayer focused game, the setting and the story should still be rich and there will be a world to get lost in.
The multiplayer mode will be 5 on 5 so this isn't huge scale multiplayer like Battlefield but it's perfect for Gearbox's type of shooter. That means each individual player's contributions count a lot more. This is also a character rich game. There will be 25 unique characters to choose from.
Let's talk about the three different modes featured in Battleborn: Incursion, Devastation, and Meltdown. The names are very distinct, we have to give them credit there.
Incursion has you fighting teams against waves of AI controlled minions with teams working to defend their own base while simultaneously trying to destroy the base of their opponents. This is the primary mode and it's the one that plays most like a MOBA. The mechanics are similar, but the action will definitely be different seeing as this is a shooter. Most MOBA's are built around real time strategy mechanics so this will be much faster paced like a twitch shooter. There's going to be many skills at play here. We may have really sharpshooting snipers picking off enemies from afar. And we might have heavy burst damage type classes on the frontlines.
This is essentially the first, first person shooter MOBA. The current closest games are Smite and Orcs Must Die Unchained but those are third person and still more in the fantasy world of casting spells. Gearbox's shooters do require more precision with headshots and a high variety of impact and hitscan based weapons. This could lead the way for more MOBA shooters as Gearbox tends to get their games right most of the time. Yeah, let's just pretend we forgot about Duke Nukem Forever. As much as we have a lot of MOBA comparisons and assumptions, Gearbox's intention is to make this game significantly different.
The next mode is Devastation which is an objective based team deathmatch. Now hopefully these objectives are a little more complex than a domination style gameplay. I'd like to see something similar to games like Dirty Bomb, where it involves demolition or moving a carried objective. But Gearbox hasn't shared the details on this one yet.
Lastly we have meltdown which is where teams will protect their minions as they march to their death at the center of the map. This is like a more chaotic more like a free for all version of Incursion. It's really going to be a mode to mess around in and rack up kills. Real competition will be in Incursion and Devastation.
Experience points gained during the story and the competitive play work toward leveling up character rank and command rank. Character rank can be raised from 1 to 10 "outside of missions and matches," and will unlock skins as well as "swap out augments in their helix skill tree." Command rank ranks up player profiles, unlocking badges and loot, among other perks .
