Hey everyone, I'm Mason (he/him), and I've reached master rank three different times on my accounts in pokemon unite without spending a dime on item enhancers. My entire goal with this guide is to have a comprehensive resource available to free to play players, who aim to either rank up for more end of season tickets, or reach master rank.
While this game is primarily aimed at free to play players, you do not need to be one to get value out of the strategies and advice here. The vast majority of info here is useful for everyone, it's just that the character and held item sections are geared towards players deciding on what to use their limited resources on.
I play many characters, and I play every lane & jungle, so I have experience from different roles and perspectives with this game. I feel like I have a very solid understanding of how the game functions fundamentally, and what you should be doing throughout the match to raise your chances of success as much as possible.
This is not a "rank up fast" guide, or something that will cheese you into a higher rank without much effort. These tips and strategies will take time to implement, potentially multiple watch-throughs to full grasp everything. However, if you take the time to implement everything here, you will become better at the game, start winning more often, and have more impact in your games, which will help you reach your goals over time.
I feel like I underrated Slowbro a bit in my own guide. I feel like it's a great pick, just difficult to use without a coordinated team. I think Scald is the way to go, it gives a 30% damage reduction to enemies with 80% uptime, and Telekinesis allows you to lift up enemies for teammates to focus down, and pull them into your team to catch them out of position.
Here's two great Slowbro guides I highly recommend:
1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd1aXeq3fDE
2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBrXLoT6yOs
The first one downplays Slowbro Scald, the second one (from the same person) goes into how Scald works, how he's changed his opinion on Scald, and how it can be used to counter common meta characters such as Greninja.
I still maintain my opinion that Blastoise and Snorlax are overall far stronger defender picks, and that Crustle thrives in very uncoordinated games, like in solo queue, but I feel like I didn't give Slowbro enough credit in the guide, so at least anyone reading the description this far understands that, lol.
Attack Weight and Sp. Atk Specs aren't that bad, however they require a greater understanding of the game & more niche playstyle to use effectively, and rely on a conditional effect unlike most other held items. I do not recommend them for anyone who doesn't already have a master-level understanding of the game or greater. Aeos Cookie is just overshadowed by Buddy Barrier and Focus Band incredibly heavily as a defensive item.
I accidentally drew 6 circles instead of 5 in the team fight positioning section, I guess it just looked right to me at the time. My bad. Just pretend your 6th teammate is the enemy Cinderace that stayed in top lane the entire game.
This guide is bound to have outdated information as balance patches and new characters are added, so following the channels I linked at the start of the description are the best way to stay up to date with pokemon unite news and new strategies. The guide is mainly intended for the end of season 1, as well as having a fresh approach into season 2.
Since this guide is a lot of smaller guides packed into one guide, you could say it's the Kirby Super Star Ultra of Pokémon Unite guides.
