Freespace: Between the Ashes - Shell Game
3This is the second mission of the Between the Ashes campaign anthology's demo, Mefistofele. BtA is a series of three campaigns (plus this demo) all set between the events of Silent Threat: Reborn and the start of the Freespace 2 campaign.
In the demo, we are criminals for hire, performing a daring heist at a research station in Antares, with the objective of stealing ancient Vasudan artifacts. We successfully made the heist, but the freighter captain carrying the cargo got spooked and dumped the container before fleeing for the hills from his boss' retribution. We are now escorting a new freighter to pick it up and complete the delivery. Complicating factor: It was dumped in a ship graveyard near the jump node nexus in Alpha Centauri (first encountered in "Exodus," the twenty-first mission of the original Freespace campaign), and the local scavengers are none to happy to share their spoils. We need to find the cargo, make the pickup, and get out quickly.
Unlike previous Freespace content on the channel, this is going to be a blind first play! Between the Ashes was released during my decade off from this game, so all of this will be brand new to me as I play it. A sequel, Between the Ashes 2, is in development, but won't release until 2022.
