Fuwaru the Apprentice [みならい魔法使いフワルの冒険] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
Original Air Date: August 22, 2009
みならい魔法使いフワルの冒険 (Minarai Mahou Tsukai Fuwaru no Bouken or "The Adventure of the Magical Apprentice Fuwaru-chan") is more commonly referred to as "Fuwaru the Apprentice". However, the game nowadays is quite hard to find, since MSD's (Marcken Software Developer) main website seems to be gone. Even when the game came out, there was very little buzz about it...just like another quality doujin game, Tirkiss ~Princess Shade~. The truth of the matter is; there are a number of "hidden gem" doujin games that don't get nearly enough mention and Fuwaru is no exception.
The game deals with a young magician-in-training known as Fuwaru-chan. She basically goes around defeating evil monsters and helping the residents in the town of Tolkin. As she travels, she will be able to summon familiars who give her map abilities and powerful magic attacks. For example, her first familiar is a rabbit-like creature known as Mute (Myuuto). At the end of this video, I basically just have Fuwaru summon Mute so you can see one of Fuwaru's special ablities. Mute can carry Fuwaru over large chasms. Fuwaru can also later go underwater and break hard blocks too. You can also buy a couple of items with coins from the shop at Tolkin. Fuwaru will later get the ability to use more powerful magic with her familiars too. For example, the familiar that allows her to go underwater can later be used to also shoot powerful water dragons as a special attack.
The music is very nice and peaceful and the game possesses some cute and charming 16-bit style graphics (similar to SNES or Genesis). My only real gripe with the game is the controls; they are a bit too "slidey". It feels that you are controlling a character on ice all the time. However, if you take your time and don't try to run too much, the control is very managable...though you will have to run to make huge jumps at various points. Fuwaru must pick up speed during a run too; which is something else you must keep in mind.
Anyway, it's a quality game. I meant to make a video for this game for sometime now, but always kept putting it off...and I've been putting it off for about six months now, lol. Enjoy.
