Flight Switch On! [東方地平線~FlightSwitchOn!] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
Original Air Date: January 08, 2010
A simple Touhou strategy game of sorts. You gain levels, but don't gain any HP with levels. You do get stronger from leveling up though. You must "POWER UP" a character with funds to boost their HP. However, the game utilizes a weird "SaGa" method of using "Life Points" (shown as stars). When you lose all of your max HP, a red number will be displayed as damage. When you lose all your stars, a character dies.
It creates a somewhat interesting engine because of the game's "combo" system. There are various attacks, that hit for really high HP damage, which is effective against boss characters with low life points, but high HP and relatively weak multi-hitting attacks that are EXTREMELY effective against low HP characters with high life points. For example, Cirno only has 10 HP, but high life points. However, a character with even a weak combo will give Cirno a really hard time. For starters, there is a basic combo attack that hits 5 times for 15-20 damage. This means that each hit takes more than Cirno's max HP, thus dealing five life point damage. However, she can get hit by super powerful single hit spells and be rendered relatively unharmed, because no matter how powerful the attack, if it only hits once, she will only lose one life point (CIRNO IS THE STRONGEST???)
Reimu is a "balanced" character with some HP and some life points and decent attacks that can help fight enemies with moderately high HP and low HP enemies with high life points, since she has a basic combo attack of her own (four hits). Her combo is pretty decent, dealing 30-40 points of damage per hit and it can even clobber multiple enemies in range, making Reimu very effective. However, don't get too comfortable using her. While her HP seems much higher than Cirno, enemies are very powerful and usually deal 80-100 damage in attacks early on, which means Reimu is actually in more danger in various circumstances than Cirno, since Reimu has less life points and would lose one regardless.
The game would be pretty awesome if the presentation wasn't so crazy generic (blue screen for dialogue???) and if there were real shops and more tactical elements to the game. The basic idea is to simply keep low HP characters away from high combo enemies and keep characters like Marisa with high HP to fight bosses who also tend to high HP. Marisa can also "sample" new enemies, since she can walk into a fray and absorb damage. If a character uses a weak multi-hit attack on her, keep people like Cirno FAR away. If they are powerful, move Marisa away and put Cirno in front. It's really that simple. Use balanced people like Reimu at your own discretion.
Enjoy.
