A gameplay video of the modern version of Helmet on hard mode in Game & Watch Gallery 2 for the Nintendo Game Boy Color. In this run, I managed to clear my high score for the mode.

In Helmet, the object is to make it from the left side of the screen to the right, while avoiding falling tools and objects. The door on the building on the right will open and close randomly, often forcing the player to have to survive through the rain of hazards until it opens again. Each collision with a tool results in a miss and three misses end the game.

In the modern version, a P-Switch will appear in the playing field. When pressed, coins will appear on the ground for Mario to collect. Like in Octopus, the more coins Mario collects, the higher his bonus will be when he enters the door on the right. Likewise, again like Octopus, Mario's weight increases with every few coins he collects, which slows his movement down. From time to time, a star will appear in the right-hand door, which gives bonus points when collect if Mario makes it in the door while it is in the doorway.

Helmet is one of the first games in the Game & Watch Gallery series where multiple levels have been added to the modern version. The first level resembles the playing field of the original game, with a lone Koopa Paratroopa dropping items down onto Mario. After 500 points, Toad will appear in the door and take Mario to the second stage of the game. In Level 2, Mario must avoid bombs dropped by the Shy Guy flying above. To mix things up, canons above will catch the bombs and shoot them about in different directions. Another 500 points will lead Mario to the third area. In the third stage, Mario must make his way through Bowser's castle, avoiding Thwomps and Podoboos along the way.
