A quick gameplay video of the modern version of Octopus, on hard mode, in Game & Watch Gallery for the Nintendo Game Boy.

The object of the game is to dive down into the lair of the octopus and collect as many coins as possible without getting grabbed by one of its four tentacles, which results in a miss (and, as usual, three misses and the game ends). The more coins collected when you return to the boat above, the higher the bonus.

In the Modern version, the gameplay is more-or-less the truest to the original, with only a couple additional features. For starters, Mario's speed decreases as his weight with every three coins he collects, making his return more tricky for those who wish to go for higher rewards. However, Mario is also allowed to abandon his treasure with the press of the B Button to regain his speed, this also can be used to fend off tentacles if needed. The octopus also gains the ability to spit ink at Mario, which can also cost him a miss if it comes in contact with him.
