Gearend Devlog #2 - Dual-wielding and windy grass
Hey, there. Here's another development log video showing Gearend, and how far along it's gotten.
Gearend will be a 2D exploration Metroid-like game in which you control a small robot as he explores the world around him and acquires parts to traverse the environment and defeat enemies with. It's being made in the Blender Game Engine and should be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux when completed.

I've been working on the art some more, and I'm happy with the way everything looks. I don't usually work with larger sprites, so it's an interesting, fun experience. I'm sure my little drawing tablet I got helps me out there considerably (it's a VisTablet PenPad). I added some basic grass movement that reacts to your attacks. I got the idea from a really cool-looking game called Path To The Sky, I believe. I should've mentioned that in the video, hah...

Anyway, I harshened the lighting a bit to make it look more like it's nighttime in the game, as well. I'm not a huge fan of it, though I do like the effect, and how moody and dark (but hopefully not too much so) it looks.
I also built in a light proxy system that moves lights to the nearest light-casting node to help have interesting dynamically lit areas.
The biggest change is that I added in dual-wielding weaponry and melee weapons (a sword). It was a bit of work, but I'm happy with how it turned out overall, I think. I think using skills and weaponry will pull on your Electricity gauge, so you have to be careful about how you move and attack.
Sorry about the poor audio once the music kicks in - I'm recording my voice through my headphones' microphone, and I realize now that I don't need to hear the music or sounds myself. I'll make sure to mute it while I'm playing. (The microphone really picks up the headphones well, which is a shame).
