Hoo boy is this a lot worse than the first game. The sense of gameplay direction is abysmal, opening you up to missing key abilities and items and not directing you to what you lost ever, until hours later when you reach an impasse and wonder what you missed, 10 levels ago. Letting you go into major dungeons expecting a full party, several levels too early and without the fourth character. Never really giving you a solid list of objectives or when/how to do them and just, I guess hoping you make it all fall together unaided.

They wanted an open ended exploration section, but they really did not understand how to make open ended exploration fun. There's a lot of obviously expected orders to doing things, and they just, don't enforce it or guide you in the right direction until you've hit enough dead ends to find the one that you can actually do.

They do eventually give you a solid reason to do what you've been doing all along, 1.75 games in. But they still make having an actual motivator moot by continuing to hold you at gunpoint, meaning it doesn't matter if you have a legitimate reason or not, you're still forced.

The ending is extremely limp and unrewarding. I was hoping so much for a nice climax at a Sol Sanctum revisit to defeat Alex, but, nah, he just gets comeuppance in cutscene. Also the ending rapidfire kills peoples' parents and then surprise didn't actually kill them, eliminating any sense of loss or gravity to the consequences of your victory. I would have at least wanted some sort of alternate win condition against Doom Dragon to make sure they don't die and get you a better ending or... Anything.
