How Do You Know When to Give Up?
When qualifying round goes terribly wrong, and you're positioned to start the race from the back, there's high probability that the race won't go well. What did I do? I raced anyways. When you're racing just the first lap of the race, and your car gets wrecked, there's an even higher probability that the race just won't end well. So why didn't I just quit and wait for the next race?! The answer is: I hate quitting. Even when I want to, I don't. I choose to torture myself to finish no matter what. It's how I was raised, and it'll always be a part of my personality.
After I finished my race, and I took the time to review my performance, I realized that I would have been totally better off just quitting after the first lap, and entering the 2nd or 3rd heat today. The problem is, that not only is it hard for me to quit, it's knowing that I just don't have the time, patience, and mentality to do another heat. I already wasted time doing one set of qualifying round, and I'd literally have to set aside another hour of my time to do another qualifying round and race.
If you pay attention to my lap time for my first lap in the race, you'll notice that it's about 40 seconds longer than my average lap time. That's almost 1 whole lap right there wasted on recovering from accidents and stopping at the pit for repair. If I was truly competing for some kind of title in this series, I should have quit the race already after 1st lap, and just tried my luck in the next heat. Something to note for when I do actually get more competitive overall.
At this point, I've finished Round 24 of Gran Turismo's 2020 FIA Manufacturer Series at Blue Moon Bay Speedway with something to think about: deciding whether or not the race is worth racing still if all goes wrong so early in the race. This race is also encouraging me even more to try out other car brands before entering the next Manu Series.
If you were me, would you have quit after the qualifying round? After the 1st lap of the race? Or would you have pushed on through to the end like I did today? I'd love to hear about it in the comment section below.
