Grinding to BREAK the OLDEST Untied Sonic Rush World Record! (Session 2 Part 3/3)
Since April of 2006, one obscure world record on Sonic Rush has stood unbroken for nearly 19 years. I plan to grind out 200 attempts per session until I beat it. More info can be found below.
The record in question is Crowbar's record of 620 rings on the stage Mirage Road 2, with Blaze as the character, on the website known as The Sonic Center. Before I can get into why this record has stood for so long, I need to inform you on what exactly this category is.
On TSC, there are many categories of competition aside from just speedrunning, and one of those categories is called Ring Attack. The goal of this category is simple: collect as many rings as possible and finish the stage with them. Pretty easy to understand. What makes it so interesting to me is how you go about doing it, because it isn't always as simple as finding the route that gives you the highest amount of rings. For games like Sonic Rush in particular, there's RNG thrown into the mix, because these games have monitors in them that give the player a random number of rings when opened. To be more specific, they have five potential amounts of rings they can give you: 1, 5, 10, 30, 50.
These monitors define the category in any game that has them, because the more of them in a level, the more impossible the level is to max out. In the case of Mirage Road 2, there are a whopping SIX of these monitors to be found, meaning that the perfect run of 6/6 50s has a staggering 1/15,625 chance of happening. Crowbar didn't get their record by getting perfect luck, but they did get exceptional luck. By my estimations, at bare minimum, they got a combination of monitors that gave 240 out of a possible 300 rings, which has a 1/1,953 chance of happening, meaning that if I want to beat Crowbar, I have to either match or surpass that luck, and collect all possible course rings, which is much easier said than done on this level. The BARE MINIMUM combination of values I need to pull this off is 3 50s and 3 30s in the same run.
To say the least, this is going to require quite the grind to take down. This month, I have decided to set my sights on doing just that, and will be grinding out 200 attempts each session until this record is broken. It won't happen without a fight, and I will be tracking various statistics throughout this entire grind to illustrate just how brutal this record was to break, and why I stopped trying to break it the first time around back in late 2015.
