Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam (GC) RX-78, easy route
Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam was the third (fourth if you count Federation vs. Zeon and Federation vs. Zeon DX as separate entries) Gundam arena fighting game that Capcom developed, and Bandai published. It follows the events of Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta, and ZZ and was released in 2004 in Japan for PS2 and Gamecube, while the PS2 release was the only one to make it outside Japan, landing in North America in 2005. The GC release stayed in Japan. That's the one I'm playing here.
Pick two of your favorite mobile suits (one for land battles, and one for space battles) --out of a roster of 31 total-- to battle enemy mobile suits.
GvZG is a follow-up to a Japan-only Gundam game called Mobile Suit Gundam: AEUG vs. Titans.
Capcom used the gameplay engine of this series for other games such as Gotcha Force, which was released the year before GvZG, and the Sengoku Basara arena fighters on PSP.
My favorite mobile suit to use has always been RX-78 equipped with the Gundam Hammer. It feels satisfying to hit enemies with it, and ever since I first played Federation vs. Zeon, it was my go-to for the first couple games. This is probably my second favorite game in the series after NEXT Plus simply for how weighty the combat feels, even though it feels kinda slow by today's standards.
