Today I bring you one of the most technically ambitious games made for the NES: Gun-Dec, known in the West as Vice: Project Doom. This cartridge is like three games in one. It has side-scrolling action phases with Ninja Gaiden-style precision, high-speed chases in the style of Spy Hunter, and first-person shooting phases in the style of Operation Wolf. But what makes it unique is how it mixes all that with a cinematic narrative, with scenes between levels very much in the style of 80s anime. And graphically... the console goes to the limit: well-defined sprites, smooth scrolls, and minimal flicker effects for the time. The music also shines, with tense and electronic themes that give it a very cyberpunk feel. Gun-Dec is a technical gem of the Famicom, and it demonstrates what could be achieved in 8 bits when you wanted to break the mold.
