Finishing Half-Life 2 without jumping? Is that even possible? Turns out it is, with a little ingenuity, and a bit of help from the gravity gun. This video features myself conquering every obstacle you face in the game without jumping, everything else you can simply walk through. There's also a few clips peppered throughout for those possibly interested in speed. I hope you enjoy!
All of the songs used are in the credits! 16:12 =)
So, the infamous clip at 2:23! It may surprise you to learn that it isn't a jump. More than a few people have commented on this clip, so it's worth it to explain it further. There's a technique in Half-Life where you hold forward and a strafe key, W and D in this case, and move your mouse in the same direction as your strafe in unison, which would be to the right in this case. This makes you run a little faster. If you combine that with Sprint, you move a fair bit faster. If you've ever seen someone bunny hop, you'll notice they tend to look to either the left or right, and then begin their jumping sequence. What they're doing there is taking advantage of the speed that the strafing technique above grants you. I do the same thing at 2:23, except in my case, I use the curved section of the pipe to give me the height I need to clear the gap, without the use of a jump.
I do enjoy the comments about 2:23, they remind me of how I felt the first few times I sampled Gold Source and Source projects. They seemed terribly suspect, so I have a lot of sympathy, but it's all very much legit, and I'm more than happy to explain it thoroughly, because Source is a beautiful thing.
