Harvest Hunt - New First Person Horror Roguelite Game Where You Must Hunt The Hunter! First Run!
Harvest Hunt is a new Roguelite horror game that came out on May 22, 2024. It was developed by Villainous Games Studio and published by Neonhive Games. It can be found on Steam at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2009620/Harvest_Hunt/
Harvest Hunt is like playing a cat and mouse game. You have to be stealthy while collecting Ambrosia around the maps, all while avoiding the Devourer until you have a weapon to attack it with to knock a fragment off of it. You then need to place the fragment(s) into an effigy to banish the Devourer. This allows you to grab the Devourer's mask, which gives you more rewards.
As you play, you earn cards that help your character, like faster crouch speed and vigor back when hitting the Devourer, but you also get negative effects, like the Devourer having a toxic trail, or starting with half health. Each night, you earn more cards, and you must carefully choose how you want each night to play out.
The Devourer seems pretty simple at first once you get use to hitting it. As the nights progress, however, it starts to get minions that can alert the Devourer to your presence, or even harm you! It gets much harder once this comes into play since there is so much stuff like corn that obscures your view, and you can find yourself bumping into minions at the worst of times.
You have a lantern, and when it is on, the Devourer can see you, and will attack you. You can turn the lantern off to help avoid detection, but the longer it is off, the worse your vision gets. I don't know if having it off for too long results in a death or something, but I am sure there has to be a consequence. You have to get a sense of when to keep it on, and when to turn it off. Try to keep tabs on where the Devourer is if you can!
I don't know too much more beyond this, or how surviving a harvest season versus dying during one makes the run different, but after dying in the last stage before the first season, I was put in the shoes of a new Warden. I am interested to learn more about all these mechanics because this game seems pretty deep once you start getting into it!
I would suggest giving it a try if you like these kind of games! It's not the typical kind of game I play, but it was enjoyable, and playing something that I don't really play was nice for a change. It can be stressful walking around, creating noise, all while trying to stay hidden.
