Haven Secret of Caledria, a First Crack Friday Early Look!
9As a young man, Oswyn travelled with his father -- a captain in the Caledrian army -- under the orders of the emperor to put an end to a rebellion, only to discover that not all was as it seemed. His father chose to disobey the emperor and allow the so-called rebels to live. Five years later, after Oswyn's father passed away and a new emperor rose to power, the land of Caledria enjoy a period of peace, ruled by a kinder, more understanding man. Oswyn has followed in his father's footsteps and is now a lieutenant in the Caledrian army, when a royal artifact is stolen from the castle. Oswyn must team up first with a friend, and then with his sister, to find out who is behind the theft and, hopefully, to return the artifact to its rightful place.
Haven: Secret of Caledria is such a fun callback to the Super Nintendo days of RPGs, reminding me of my all-time favorites with its art style and music but having new, updated combat mechanics that bring depth and strategy to the combat and building characters. Being able to extract gems to give your characters new abilities is a great bit of customization that can be changed on the fly to suit your playstyle, your characters' inherent abilities, and what kinds of monsters you'll be up against.
Outside of combat, the Nova Ring being something that can stun enemies so you can get preemptive strikes on them, as well as being used for solving puzzles is a really nice extra touch! Being able to power it up and have a reason to revisit old areas and find new things in them gives more things to enjoy and discover in the game, especially when it's combined with the sidequests you can pick up and complete either as you go or in places you've already finished. And with the minigames to mess with, especially the Novagon card game, I can see spending several extra hours playing it.
