Outside of South Africa she is probably best remembered as the wife of the Anti-Apartheid struggle icon Nelson Mandela (they divorced in 1996).

But inside the country she was an icon in her own right due to her activism and her imprisonment and torture by the Apartheid government. And as a result she ultimately played a prominent role in South African politics for close to 40 years.

Unfortunately her legacy is tainted by her involvement in several political murders during the struggle and accusations of corruption dogged her even before she took her seat in the new democratic government.

In 2003 she was convicted of theft and fraud involving money meant to be used for a funeral fund and would later be sentenced to 5 years in prison.

She appealed multiple times and eventually had some of the charges overturned, paid a fine for the others and did not serve any time in prison.

Due to the nature of South African politics this prosecution, conviction and even the later overturned charges were all likely politically motivated.

Despite this conviction and her checkered past Madikizela-Mandela remained a popular enough figure in South Africa and she was again elected to parliament in 2009 though her own party, the African National Congress (the party that has ruled South Africa since 1994) largely sidelined her.

She died in office in 2018.
